Native American Heritage Month

Native American Heritage Month

Wow, I can’t believe that I was not aware that November is Native American Heritage Month. Having taken a class on Native American History, and learning more in depth of the struggles, hardships, and cruelty that the first people on this land have endured; I was taken by surprised when I came across an article which spoke on the topic. Further search led me to Obama’s proclamation for the observance of Native American Heritage in November, and I felt compelled to write about it. My hope is that we all learn more about Native Americans, and the troubles that they currently face in the world today. After all, awareness just like education is key to making this world a better place for us all. A good read to get you started would be, Black Elk Speaks. The book was written by a poet in the 1930’s, by the name of John G. Neighardt. A wonderful book beautifully written about the life of Black Elk of the Oglala Sioux Tribe.

Love, T
